Jasper Dommett

Jasper Dommett (b. 1997) is an accomplished British composer who is currently pursuing a PhD at the Royal College of Music, where they also hold the title of the 2023 Mendelssohn Scholar. In 2023, Jasper graduated with double distinction from the Royal Academy of Music, where they also received a DipRAM for their outstanding work. Throughout their studies, they were supported by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Trust and the Countess of Munster Trust. Prior to this, Jasper graduated with first-class honours from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Jasper’s PhD research revolves around the exploration of the intricate connections between queer marginalisation and the marginalisation of microtonality within western tuning systems, viewed through the prism of opera. From their research, they are hoping to produce a substantial operatic work which explores queer themes and narratives. Jasper’s interest in this field was piqued when writing their work, “Disco! Disco! Good! Good?” for the Riot Ensemble. This piece, which was subsequently nominated for an Ivor Novello award, pays homage to the vibrant queer ballroom culture, which served as a haven for LGBTQIA+ individuals to express themselves through dance and fashion.

Jasper’s music has also been performed by soloists and ensembles such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Hebrides Ensemble, Psappha, Fenella Humphreys, Tabea Debus, and George Fu; with broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and performances at Usher Hall, Southbank Centre, St Martin-in-the-Fields, St Davids Hall, Royal Glasgow Concert Hall, and BBC Hoddinott Hall.
