Royal College of Music Woodwind Faculty welcomes two eminent new oboe professors

John Roberts, principal oboe of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and Melanie Rothman, oboist in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, join the Royal College of Music (RCM) Woodwind Faculty. 

James Williams, Director of the Royal College of Music, comments: 'It gives me great pleasure to welcome two of Europe’s finest oboists to join the RCM's community of wind professors. Both John and Melanie’s professional performance experience and passion for teaching will be of immense value to our students.'

Marie Lloyd, Royal College of Music Head of Woodwind, comments: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to be welcoming John Roberts and Melanie Rothman as new oboe professors to the woodwind department. Both are wonderfully exciting teachers and players and we look forward to them becoming part of our exceptional team.’

A revered figure in the classical music world, John Roberts has held the prestigious position of principal oboe with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013. He joins the Royal College of Music as oboe professor, bringing with him not only his exceptional artistry but also vast music industry experience as principal oboe with the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Melanie Rothman is a highly sought-after guest principal oboist, regularly performing with the Bergen Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and The Frankfurt Opera. A member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, she is also an acclaimed soloist and chamber musician, regularly premiering new works but with an equally deep interest in early music.
