Returning student registration

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Royal College of Music from Monday 16 September 2024. There are a few things you need to do before term starts.

Please ensure you read all the information below and prepare accordingly. Not doing so may cause problems with your return to study.

Generally, returning students are not required to check-in in person.

However, there are some instances where returning students will need to check-in:

  • if your circumstances have changed, for example, if you have changed your name or, in the case of overseas students, obtained a new passport or visa over the vacation period.
  • if you are a visa national returning from a period of interruption and have a new Student Visa

In the case of those returning from interruption, we will email you with details of your check-in time. If you need to check-in because your circumstances have changed, please come to the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall between 11.30am and 12.00pm on Tuesday 17 September.

Please see documentation requirements for information on documents you will need to bring (section 3 for new students).

1. Online registration & fee payment

Re-registration and fee payment takes place online and must be completed before induction week. You will receive an email with the subject 'Student Self Service Account Activation', which will contain a link to the registration and payment portal along with your username and password.

This email will be sent to your RCM account. Please ensure you check it regularly.

As part of the online process you will:

  • Check your personal details
  • Check and update your permanent, term-time and emergency contact addresses and other contact details
  • Agree to the RCM's terms & conditions of registration
  • Pay your fees

When you confirm registration, having agreed to the RCM's terms and conditions, you agree to abide by the RCM student code & procedures. This document covers a range of codes, procedures, regulations and policies, including the regulations of your programme. It is your responsibility to make sure you understand this, and in particular, the various consequences in case of misconduct (academic and personal) or non-payment of debts.

Student Protection Plan

You must either have payed your fees in full or payed the first instalment of an agreed payment plan by the beginning of term. Most people will arrange to pay their fees as part of the online registration process, which must be completed by 1 September. The payment (or first instalment) will be taken automatically on the first day of term.

If you have experienced difficulties paying your fees online or would like more information about the fee payment process, please refer to our Paying fees page.

2. Late registration & absence

Students who do not register online by 1 September may be required to pay a late registration fee of £20.

Students who will not be present for any part of induction week must make an application for Leave of Absence (or N/A for Vocal students) in the usual way. You can apply through learn.rcm.

You will still need to complete online registration and pay fees in the usual timeframe.

If you have not registered online by 1 September, your access to Asimut will be suspended. Only after you have completed online registration will your access to Asimut be restored.

3. Overseas student visa holders

Student Visa holders must ensure they are familiar with UK Visas & Immigration requirements regarding attendance, engagement with your studies, restrictions on working hours during term time and Police registration.  Information will be available on the Orientation page of learn.rcm.

4. Student ID card, RCM ICT account & email address

As you know, the RCM student ID card is linked to the RCM Library, Asimut and printing and copying facilities. Your ID card will be valid for the duration of your programme. If you lose your card, you can get a replacement from the Registry at a cost of £10.

Please note that you will not be able to book rooms, print, copy or borrow from the RCM Library without an ID card.

It is RCM policy that communication via RCM email is the way in which College information is conveyed. It is, therefore, vitally important that you check your RCM email address each day. This can be either via your mobile device, via the terminals around College or via the internet using RCM webmail. You will also find essential information on the RCM's virtual learning environment, learn.rcm.

The RCM provides a wide range of technology equipment and software to support your studies. This guide will introduce you to the facilities and services that are available and make recommendations for the personal devices and software we recommend students have to make the most of their time at the RCM and the services and support available.

6. One-to-one study lessons

One-to-one Study lessons may begin from Wednesday 18 September.

Healthcare & Vaccinations

Please make sure you read this information carefully and take all necessary steps to ensure you are fully prepared BEFORE you arrive at the RCM.

RCM students may be eligible to register with the Imperial College Health Centre for primary NHS care medical services. Further details are available from the IC Health Centre website. It is recommended that you register for ICHC GP services.

In preparation for coming to the RCM, it is strongly recommended that you are immunised to protect yourself against illnesses that, although rare, occur more commonly amongst university-age students: meningococcal infections (meningitis), measles and mumps. If you have not been immunised against these infections, you should arrange to be vaccinated by your doctor. The risk of infection is greater in the first few weeks of the first term, so it is important that all new students are vaccinated before arrival. Note that if you have already been immunised against meningitis, you need to check you have had the MenACWY vaccination which has not always been a part of the UK National Immunisation Programme. The MenACWY vaccine is not the same as Meningitis C. Students from certain countries may also need to be tested for latent Tuberculosis.

If you have not had all of these vaccinations, please attend the IHCH to do so as soon as possible, as the risk of infection is greatest in the first few weeks of term. If you are uncertain about your vaccination status, it is safer to have the vaccines again, than potentially be unprotected. Details are available on the ICHC website.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in the UK. In order to prevent this, especially if you are spending long hours practising, in the library or online, we recommend you take an over-the-counter supplement. Please see the following link for details.

7. Student Oyster Photocard

The RCM is part of the Transport for London Student Oyster Photocard scheme, which entitles students on courses of six months of longer to cheaper travel rates in London. You can apply online via the TfL website. You should select 18+ Student. You will need your RCM student ID, which will be included in the email sent to you inviting you to register (early August), and a digital passport-style photograph to upload with your application.

There is an application fee of £10 and you will need to provide your course start and end dates which are 16 September 2024 to 5 July 2025. Part-time students, students on courses shorter than six months and students who are not registered are ineligible.

8. Electoral registration

Students that are UK nationals, Irish nationals, Commonwealth nationals or EU nationals resident in the UK may register to vote. The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) provides full advice on eligibility. You can register to vote at both your home and term-time addresses if they are in different local authority areas within the UK. You can vote in local elections in both areas but only once in general elections. You can check if you are already registered to vote by getting in touch with your local authority. Enter your postcode at www.gov.uk/get-on-electoral-register to find your local electoral registration office and contact them directly. If you are not on the electoral roll, register online to vote in England, Scotland or Wales at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

9. Accommodation

Please be aware that if you have signed a tenancy agreement for a room at Prince Consort Village or any other student accommodation, you have entered into a contractual arrangement with them directly, independently from the RCM. The RCM cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred in the event that you do not continue studies at the RCM, including in the event of you failing to progress to the next year of study.

10. Students with outstanding assessment

Students who are yet to complete assessment and thus, are not yet eligible to progress to the next year of their programme, will be able to register online. However, their registration and continued study is contingent upon successful completion of assessment and ratification by the Board of Examiners in early September. You will receive further communication from the Board of Examiners if this applies to you.

11. Students with outstanding tuition fee debt

Students with outstanding tuition fee debt or debt relating to reassessment or deferred assessment will not be eligible to re-register. You will have received reminders about outstanding debt. If you have any queries about this, please contact our Student Finance team.
