Nicholas Moroz is a composer, researcher, and the artistic director of Explore Ensemble. His music has been performed by musicians including the GBSR Duo, trombonist Sebastiaan Kemner, Explore Ensemble, Lonelinoise, Silbersee, Residentie Orkest, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, ensemble recherche, and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, at venues and festivals such as hcmf//, De Doelen Rotterdam, Royaumont, Moscow Philharmonic, Aldeburgh Festival, St Magnus International Festival, Dartington, and the Royal Academy of Arts.

As the artistic director of Explore Ensemble he has commissioned dozens of new chamber works by UK and international artists, ranging from acoustic to live electronic and video pieces. Recent commissions include works by Joanna Bailie, Angharad Davies, Beatrice Dillon, Lawrence Dunn, Mark Fell, Nakul Krishnamurthy, and Rebecca Salvadori. He has lead the ensemble across the UK and Europe at festivals including hcmf//, No Bounds, Aldeburgh, Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, London Contemporary Music Festival, Louth Contemporary Music Society, Transit Leuven, and November Music. In 2022 Explore Ensemble received the internationally prestigious Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung Ensemble Prize in recognition of its achievements.

Nicholas is currently completing an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded DPhil in Music degree at the University of Oxford, where his research investigates the relationships between aesthetics, technology, composition, and collaboration in the context of live electronic music. He previously ran the EXPO series for experimental music in Oxford together with Jonathan Packham, producing public concerts and workshops on topics including AI, VR, and Spatialisation.

Also active as a recording engineer, Nicholas recently produced Explore Ensemble’s 2023 release ‘Perfect Offering’ for Huddersfield Contemporary Records, featuring music by Cassandra Miller, Lisa Illean, and Rebecca Saunders, mixed in Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos.

As a musicologist, he has written about composers including Morton Feldman, Luigi Nono, and Fausto Romitelli, as well as the topic of spatialisation.
