Kate was inspired to learn at the age of 12 by Eric Taylor, the local bandmaster in St Keverne village, Cornwall. His military style of direction was both formidable and inspiring and was responsible for Kate eventually pursuing a professional career in music, spanning 45 years. She accepted a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, initially joint first study cornet and singing, before going on to study trumpet with Maurice Murphy, Crispian Steele-Perkins and Paul Cosh.
 
Kate was appointed Principal Cornet with the BBC Concert Orchestra in 1987 and Section Principal Trumpet in 2000 and is often heard with the orchestra on BBC Radio 2 and 3. Kate has been invited to perform as guest principal with many of the UKs leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House and the English Chamber Orchestra and has recently performed the Haydn, Aratunian and Pakhmutova concertos.

Kate is also in demand as a session player. Her discography includes various genres; TV and film scores, Blue Planet, Frozen Planet, Planet Earth, Inception, Skyfall, Spectre, Solo: A Star Wars story, among many others; popular artists, Sting, Elbow, Florence and the Machine; jazz artists Gregory Porter, James Morrison; classical artists Joseph Calleja, Renée Fleming.

Kate's vast experience across all genres of music enable her to advise on a wide spectrum of musical styles. Her teaching approach is to give each student individually tailored instruction encompassing musical, physical and psychological aspects of playing. She is also an experienced ensemble coach and has previously worked with the Southbank Sinfonia and the National Youth Brass Band. Kate is passionate about helping her students realise their full potential to become the best musicians they can be.
