The Scalpel and the Bow

Monday 14 January 2013

Head of Performance Science Professor Aaron Williamon has featured on the popular BBC Radio 3 series Between the Ears.

In this innovative and thought-provoking programme - called the Scalpel and the Bow - Aaron and Roger Kneebone, Professor of Surgical Education at Imperial College London, discuss how they use simulated performance environments to introduce student musicians and trainee surgeons to challenging performance conditions. By recreating the pressures of an operating theatre and concert hall the professors are able to explore the abstract inner world of the musician and surgeon.

RCM postgraduate and undergraduate cellists Jane Lindsay and George Ross, as well as RCM Junior Department cellist Linden Ralph, all contributed to the programme and you can hear additional interviews with them on the Centre for Performance Science website. A short video demonstrating how the performance simulator works is also available.

The Scalpel and the Bow is available on BBC iPlayer until Friday 18 January.
