BBC Proms Inspire Success for RCMJD’s Shoshanah Sievers

Shoshanah Sievers has been announced by BBC Radio 3 as one of two winners of the 2016 BBC Proms Inspire Competition’s 12-14 category.

Shoshanah’s winning piece, Les Nuances de la Lumière for solo violin, will be performed by a member of the Aurora Orchestra at a concert in the BBC Radio Theatre in London on 15 August as part of a Proms Extra event.

‘I entered the BBC Proms Inspire Competition because I felt it was a unique and wonderful opportunity to have my music shared amongst so many people’ said Shoshanah, who studies with Simon Speare, Head of Composition at RCMJD.

An excellent violinist herself, Shoshanah initially wrote the piece for one of her recitals. ‘I tried to include a variety of different techniques for the instrument, inspired by the music of the Belgian violinist, Eugène Ysaÿe.’ The title, she says, is ‘reflected the piece’s inherent, swift changes of colour and harmony’.

The BBC Proms Inspire scheme provides young musicians aged 12-18 with a friendly environment for sharing ideas, meeting like-minded composers and developing their musical creativity. As well as the opportunity to work alongside some of the UK’s top composers and musicians, all six winners of the competition will receive a BBC commission.
