Tim Walden

Cello professor

Timothy Walden was born in London and began taking cello lessons when he was eight. He studied in London at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and subsequently held positions as Principal Cello with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Nationale du Capitole de Toulouse, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra. He is currently Principal Cello of English National Opera and appears regularly as guest principal cello of the LSO and BBC Symphony Orchestras.

As a soloist, Timothy has performed and recorded extensively both on disc and for radio with all the major orchestras throughout the UK and abroad, covering the core cello repertoire. He has performed the major concertos of Beethoven (Triple Concerto), Brahms (Double Concerto), Dvorák, Elgar, Haydn, Schumann, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky; and Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote. He recently recorded Birchall’s Cello Concerto (a work dedicated to him) with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Michael Collins. He has worked with eminent conductors including Kees Bakels, Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Valery Gergiev, Neeme Järvi, Yakov Kreizberg, Alexander Lazerev, Andrew Litton, Kurt Masur, Riccardo Muti, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sir Georg Solti and Yuri Temirkanov.

An active chamber musician, Timothy has collaborated with such distinguished artists as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Joshua Bell, Cho-Liang Lin, Andrew Litton, Simon Trpceski and Esther Yoo.

Tim has been on faculty at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Australian National Academy of Music as well as RSAMAD.
