Julia attended Chethams School of Music in Manchester and continued her studies as Scholar at the Royal Northern College of Music . She graduated with a first (GRNCM) and also has a Masters in performance specialising in prevention of performance related injuries.

Julia joined the BBC Philharmonic first violin section in 1990  and  was also a member of the Degani String Quartet and was featured on BBC Young Composer of the Year on BBC2 playing the winning composition.

After leaving the BBC Philharmonic in 2001 Julia has enjoyed a busy freelance career playing with the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, English Chamber Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, English National Opera, BBC Concert Orchestra, playing Principal 2nd with the Halle and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and guest leader of the Ulster Orchestra.

Julia teaches at Royal Holloway University of London and is Senior Tutor (Sinfonia) at Royal College of Music Junior Dept.

Julia is Leader of Farnborough Symphony Orchestra, Kingston Philharmonia, Rose Opera Teddington, Co Leader  West Green Opera, Leader of Guildford Opera and Leader Easter Orchestral Society. She freelances as Concertmaster for other various chamber orchestras. Julia is also a member of Kucharsky String Quartet.

Outside of work Julia enjoys swimming, running and cycling (she represented GB in Triathlon in 2000 World Championship). These days however, Julia is happy walking her beloved spaniel Louie in the Surrey Hills!
