Christian Barraclough

Headshot for Christian Barraclough

Christian was born in London in 1990 and started playing the trumpet when he was eight years old. In 2008 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music under Alistair Mackie, Mark Calder, and Mike Lovatt, where he graduated in 2012 with a first, having won the Tagore Gold Medal and the Brass Prize.

Christian now enjoys a busy freelance career which takes him from the recording studio where he has performed on hundreds of film, TV, and video game scores, to orchestral performances, including playing principal trumpet with orchestras such as The Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and many more. He also has a keen interest in contemporary music and often performs with the London Sinfonietta, collaborating with new artists and composers.

Away from more traditional classical playing, Christian has performed with artists such as Procol Harum, These New Puritans, Gregory Porter, Hans Zimmer, The Stranglers, and Burt Bacharach. He also plays regularly in the West End in some of London’s biggest shows. Further to this, he enjoys a varied chamber music career having played with groups such as London Brass, Onyx Brass, and Septura.

He can be heard on countless film scores including the Marvel films, KingsMan, Wonder Woman 1984, Doctor Strange: in the Multiverse of Madness, Jurassic World Dominion, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Dunkirk, among others. He has also played on many orchestral recordings and radio broadcasts, as well as a video recording of Brandenburg 2 with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021.

Christian tries to bring influences from his eclectic playing career into his teaching. He hopes that students will benefit from learning a broad range of styles, sounds and technique, tailored around the individual.
