Success for the Manon Quartet

The RCM’s Manon Quartet has won the Cavatina Intercollegiate String Quartet Competition.

The string quartet - made up of RCM violinists Jian Ren and Fiona Robertson, violist Morag Robertson and cellist Deni Teo - beat off competition from six other quartets from the UK’s major music conservatories with their outstanding performance of Beethoven's String Quartet op 18 no 2.

After the competition, which took place at the Royal Academy of Music on Wednesday 14 May, viola player Morag commented “We are thrilled to have won the first prize as the competition was of a very high standard. We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and the audience was most appreciative.”

Their triumph came just hours after their performed at the RCM’s annual awards ceremony presided over by HRH The Prince of Wales.

The Cavatina Chamber Music Trust was formed in 1998 with the aim of developing young audiences for chamber music. It is the only organisation which concentrates solely on increasing awareness of chamber music amongst young people.
