Elliott Carter, 1908-2012

Thursday 8 November 2012

We are saddened to learn of the death of American composer Elliott Carter (1908-2012), one of the most significant composers of recent times.

Perhaps best known for his solo, chamber and orchestral works – including a widely admired sequence of concertos – Carter’s extensive output also encompasses songs, ballets, choral works and one opera: the knowingly titled What Next?, which Carter completed at the age of 90.

Carter’s 100th birthday in 2008 was celebrated extensively with performances and broadcasts throughout the world, including a tribute concert at the RCM, led by Julian Jacobson and featuring Carter’s seminal sextet Triple Duo.
