RCM Welcomes ‘Colossus of the Trumpet’ Håkan Hardenberger

World-famous trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger will visit the Royal College of Music next week as part of the Philharmonia’s The Trumpet Shall Sound series.

Described as the ‘colossus of the trumpet’ by The Guardian and ‘the best trumpet player in the galaxy’ by The Times, Håkan Hardenberger is one of the greatest trumpet soloists today. 
Alongside his phenomenal performances of the classical repertory, he is also held in high regard as a pioneer of significant and virtuosic new trumpet works. 


The Swedish trumpeter will lead a special public masterclass with three young stars of British trumpet playing from the RCM, Royal Academy of Music (RAM) and Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) on Thursday 21 January. The students will work with him on a contemporary British trumpet concerto by composers associated with each institution: Mark-Anthony Turnage (RCM), Sir Peter Maxwell Davies (RAM) and Sir Harrison Birtwistle (RNCM).

Hardenberger will return to the RCM the following day to conduct RCM brass students in Janáček’s Sinfonietta. The concert, at 6pm on Friday 22 January, will also feature outstanding RCM trumpet player Jack Wilson performing From the Wreckage by RCM professor Mark-Anthony Turnage – a trumpet concerto originally written for and premiered by Håkan Hardenberger
