In 2021, Vasily takes up the position of Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra following more than ten years as Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Equally at home in the recording studio, we’re delighted to welcome him to conduct the RCM Symphony Orchestra in this online broadcast featuring a programme of orchestral arrangements.

Never completed, the original manuscript of Schubert's Seventh Symphony now resides in the RCM's Library, having been bequeathed to the College by Sir George Grove. Alongside, the RCM Symphony Orchestra presents orchestral arrangements of Schubert's dramatic lieder and Barshai’s take on Shostakovich's Jewish themed fourth string quartet. The concert concludes with a suite taken from the incidental music to Shakespeare's tragedy written for avant-garde director Nikolai Akimov.

Recorded live at the Royal College of Music in London, this is a YouTube & Facebook Premiere.

Created by Stravinsky and Swiss writer C F Ramuz, the work follows Russian soldier, Joseph, a man tempted by a deal with the devil. Swayed by promises of untold luxury and lifelong riches, Joseph comes to learn an important moral: 'No one can have it all, that is forbidden. You must learn to choose between.'

From the tango to the paso doble and waltz, it is thought Stravinsky took inspiration from the melting pot of artists living in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. Evoking a veritable wealth of feelings, flavours and folk songs this theatrical piece never fails to thrill and delight.

In Focus is an RCM initiative to share unique areas of music-making at the College with our audiences. Designed to be watched online, our immersive films offer viewers the chance to experience the warmth, intimacy and richness of chamber music, wherever they are. Filmed across our state-of-the-art venues, roving cameras offer audiences a unique perspective on our musicians’ technique and on-stage communication during the performance. There will also be the opportunity to hear more about the music direct from the performers and to discover the intriguing stories behind the programmes through the range of artefacts, instruments and paintings held in the RCM's treasured collections.
