Orchestral performance programme

"...even the Philharmonia on form would have been hard pressed to better the enthusiasm and virtuosity of the RCM orchestra"
- David Mellor, The Mail on Sunday, January 2007

The RCM's performance-based training prepares musicians to respond creatively and imaginatively to the demands and opportunities of a fast-changing profession. The programme of orchestral and chamber concerts each year ensures that students experience a range and quality of training that is second to none.

An increasingly diverse array of performance platforms allows students to explore a variety of composers and genres whilst learning from guest artists and interpreters, broadening their musical skills and knowledge. It also allows our audiences to enjoy world class performances from students in our performance spaces at the RCM and across London.

The RCM Symphony Orchestra works on a variety of projects throughout each year with conductors of international stature. They are opportunities for the best students to perform concertos and for composers to have works performed. The RCM has built dynamic, enduring relationships with many great conductors, and Bernard Haitink, Andrew Litton, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Roger Norrington are all regular visitors to the College. The conductors rehearse with RCM students and subsequently perform highly acclaimed public concerts. Their enthusiasm to return is evidence of the outstanding level of technical and artistic distinction that they attain.

The College is a place where performance is central. Through unrivalled performance opportunities, the orchestral concert platform becomes a place our students inhabit with ease, and from where, having discovered their musical voices, they learn to touch and move an audience in a diverse range of situations and settings. During their time at the RCM, students learn from London ’s top professional orchestral musicians, and regularly participate in partnership schemes with the LSO and BBC Symphony Orchestra. Sectional rehearsals for the larger ensembles are often directed by specialists from some of the UK's top professional Orchestras, many of whom are members of the RCM's professorial staff.
