RCM Sparks Juniors
Sparks Juniors is an exciting collaboration between RCM Sparks and the RCM Junior Department which launched in September 2009. Each year, the initiative offers eight pupils a free three-year programme of high level tuition led by RCMJD staff and RCM student mentors.
It is aimed at young people from local schools who would not normally be able to access such an opportunity. Currently, 80% of young people on the Sparks juniors programme are from underrepresented backgrounds.
After three years pupils are offered the opportunity to audition for the Junior Department or continue their learning at the RCM with an inspiring weekly after-school programme.
Instruments learnt by Sparks Juniors include French horn, bassoon, saxophone, trombone, flute, clarinet, cello, viola and mini-bass.
We are proud to announce that three Sparks Juniors flautists achieved excellent results in their ABRSM instrumental exams this Easter. Students also achieved great results last summer, including a merit for a Grade 5 viola pupil who has been learning for less than three years. Three students (a guitarist, tuba player and viola player) have successfully auditioned and entered the Junior Department following completion of the three-year Sparks Juniors programme.
