Performance Opportunities

Royal College of Music students have access to unmatched performance opportunities often in prestigious venues and with the most highly regarded guest artists. Every year we present more than 500 events, ranging from masterclasses and chamber concerts to orchestral concerts and operas.

We have several large ensembles in addition to our main orchestras, and students are actively encouraged to form chamber groups to help widen broaden their repertoire and develop their talent. Solo opportunities are numerous, with concert slots available every week.

Solo Performance

On your own or in front of an orchestra, solo performance is an important part of the development of all instrumentalists and singers, even if your ultimate aim is to perform as part of a group. Many RCM performers go on to have successful solo careers, having benefited from the opportunities on offer for RCM students.

Orchestral Performance

The RCM Offers an unrivalled experience for the aspiring orchestral musician. In addition to an extensive range of in-house and external performance opportunities, we are closely linked to many of London’s professional orchestras. It’s no wonder so many of our students go on to forge hugely successful careers within the orchestral profession.

Opera and Vocal Performance

RCM singers participate in a busy series of operatic and choral projects both at the RCM and further afield. The International Opera School mounts three fully-staged productions each year, as well as a number of innovative contemporary music projects.

Chamber Music and Ensemble Performance

The RCM is unique in offering unlimited coaching for its chamber groups, allowing students to benefit from the skills and experience of a number of RCM professors. At the RCM, many students form performing partnerships that last a lifetime.

New Music

The RCM has always been a fertile breeding ground for new music. We continue to be an important centre for the creation of new works with ground-breaking contemporary music ensembles and regular collaborations with London's leading cultural institutions.

Historical Performance

The RCM is recognised internationally as one of the world’s most important centres for historically informed performance.

Collaborations

There are many opportunities for RCM musicians to collobrate with other faculties and with external institutions, such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

Festivals

Every year we stage several festivals which provide a platform for individual faculties to showcase their talents. Our annual keyboard festival in the spring features a live-streamed marathon day of performances, and in recent years has explored the music of Granados and Ginastera, Messiaen and Rachmaninov and Scriabin.

Our Festival of Percussion provides an opportunity to hear and perform with the greats of the industry. In 2015, Jojo Mayer was our special guest and we welcomed percussionists from the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.

Super String Sunday explores sensational string music and we also celebrate historical performance practice every year with the RCM International Festival of Viols.
