Headshot for Michael Poyser

Mike Poyser studied Physics and Musical Performance at Imperial College and the Royal College of Music before continuing at the RCM for a Masters in Performance.  Since then, he has carved out a diverse and unusual career in both performance and education. As an educator, he has taught at the RCM and RCM Junior College for several years, is associated closely with the Royal Albert Hall, with whom he has devised numerous education and community programmes, and has worked with the charity Create for many years, including with the multi award winning project “Inside Stories” in prisons across the UK.  As well as teaching tuba and being involved with the RCM Sparks Juniors program at the RCMJD, he also teaches tuba at the Purcell School, Westminster School and Dulwich College.

As a tuba player, Mike plays regularly with the Heritage Orchestra, Quincy Jones’ Orchestra, as well as most of the UK’s top orchestras.  He has recorded on numerous film sound tracks such as Dumbo and Captain America, and recorded with pop musicians such as Rudimental, Becky Hill, Raye, Caro Emerald, Big Big Train and Pete Tong.  His jazz group Bad Ass Brass has toured extensively in the UK and abroad.  In 2018 Mike also wrote and produced the show “Brass Revolutions” for Kensington Palace and produced the science show “Brass Explosion” – which involved setting fire to all kinds of things!
