The RCM’s Dr Maiko Kawabata is undertaking groundbreaking research on the music of Japanese
composer Kikuko Kanai (1906–86), one of the first women to compose Western classical music in Japan.
This study day presents Kanai’s music in the context of the Okinawan folk music that inspired it, involving talks from leading experts and a workshop-performance from the London Okinawa Sanshinkai group.
