External funding organisations

There are some external funding bodies that may be able to assist students with tuition fees or maintenance support. A selection of funding organisations is shown below. You can find details of how to search for other organisations on our Other Funding Sources page.

1st Formations Business Scholarships

Details of award: the Scholarship awards up to 10 successful applicants with a bursary of £600 each. The bursary is designed to help students with some of the additional costs involved in studying, such as the cost of course materials, textbooks and other living expenses.

Restrictions: applicants must be a current student and be able to demonstrate academic excellence, a desire to run a business, and personal circumstances suitable for additional financial support. Not available to previous recipients of the 1st Formations Business Scholarship.

Bank of Ireland Catherine Judge Memorial Award

Details of award: The winner receives a bursary of £5,000 / €6,800 towards their studies.

Restrictions: Open to music students resident in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland who have achieved at least Grade 8 (ABRSM, LCM, Trinity, DIT or CIT) or Senior Certificate (RIAM) on their chosen instrument or voice and who wish to pursue university education in the academic year immediately following the event.

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund

Detail of award: Awards ranging from £500 to £5000. See Canadian Scholarship Fund website for further details and application forms.

Restrictions: open to Canadian students studying for full-time multi-year graduate programmes in the UK.

Commonwealth Scholarships for PhD study

Details of Award: Scholarships for PhD study for citizens of developed Commonwealth Countries. Awards are for three years of tuition fees and a maintenance grant, jointly funded by the UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and UK universities. Students must have been offered a place at their chosen university before applying.   

Restrictions: Countries currently classed as developed Commonwealth countries are: Australia, The Bahamas, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Cyprus, Malta and New Zealand.

DIKTI Scholarships

Details of awards: Scholarship fund to support university lecturers from Indonesia to study at an overseas university.

Elizabeth Eagle-Bott Memorial Awards

Details of awards: Supports blind and partially-sighted musicians, including assistance with tuition fees and instrument purchase, specialist tuition and transcriber and reader costs

EMI Music Sound Foundation

Details of awards: Instrument and Equipment Awards (grants of up to £2000)

Restrictions: Applicants must be UK citizens or Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK and have not yet purchased their intended instrument

Entente Cordiale Scholarships

Details of awards: Bilateral awards scheme funding postgraduate French students wishing to study in Britain and British students wishing to study in France

Restrictions: You must be French or have studied in France up to Bac+3.

ESU Music Scholarships

Detail of awards: Scholarships cover tuition and board and lodging, and in some cases travel, to enable young musicians to participate in in summer schools at prestigious venues such as the Banff Centre for the Arts and Tanglewood Music Centre.

Restrictions: Applicants must be instrumentalists or singers who are studying, or who have recently studied, in the UK at a recognised conservatoire.  The deadline normally falls in the October prior to the summer school.

Gilchrest Educational Trust

Details of awards: Supports students who, having made appropriate plans to fund their studies, find themselves in unexpected financial need. Also supports student undertaking a period abroad as part of their course.

Restrictions: Applicants must be full-time students at a UK university

Details of awards: Awards of up to £1000 for postgraduate students

Great Britain – China Educational Trust

Details of awards: Chinese Student Awards of around £1500 to £2000.

Restrictions: Chinese (including Hong Kong) students preparing a PhD at a British university. Applicants should be in at least their 3rd year of study

Marshall Scholarships

Details of awards: Awards for postgraduate study in the UK for US students

Restrictions: US nationals with an undergraduate degree from a US institution and a GPA of 3.7 or higher – see the website for further details

Martin Musical Scholarship Fund

Details of awards: around 60 students supported each year

Restrictions: applicants must be under 25 and studying full-time in the UK. Candidates must be studying for a performing career as soloist, chamber musician or orchestral player. Regrettably the Fund is unable to support organists, singers, guitarists, academic or jazz studies.

Royal Overseas League Music Competition

Detail of awards: Competition is open to citizens of the UK Commonwealth, including former Commonwealth countries, for instrumentalists and singers up to and including the age of 30.

Restrictions: Commonwealth (including former commonwealth and UK) up to the age of 30.

Ryan Davies Memorial Fund

Details of awards: They invite applications from individual Welsh students in the Performing Arts for grant assistance from the Ryan Davies Memorial Fund.

The Countess of Munster Trust

Details of awards: Around 70 awards each year to young musicians - applications are welcomed from instrumentalists and singers looking to undertake performance based postgraduate study, and from composers wishing to undertake postgraduate study. Loans to former beneficiaries for instrument purchase.

Details of awards: Funding support for university courses at undergraduate level.

Details of awards: Mostly provides awards (of up to £800) to undergraduate students

Details of awards: Provides study grants to your Australian musicians studying in the UK (awards in the region of £500 to £1000, normally towards maintenance costs)

The Webster and Davidson Mortification for the Blind

Details of awards:  Awards to blind and partially sighted people to support the learning of music.  Normally one-year bursaries (with the possibility of renewal) or grants for specific musical purposes.

Restrictions: Blind or partially sighted applicants.  Preference given to applicants who are ordinarily resident in Scotland.

The Women’s Careers Foundation

Details of awards: Supports women who require assistance to study for a career

The Yamaha Music Foundation of Europe

Details of awards: The YMFE-Scholarship Competition is open to full-time music students of any nationality not older than 25 years at the time of the application.

Each Scholarship has a value of 1.000,00 EUR to 2.000,00 EUR. The Scholarship covers one year and the money may be used for any purpose related to the advancement of studies.

Restrictions: The rewarded discipline changes every year. Applicants will be selected according to their current musical ability and their demonstrated future potential. For under 25 years old.

Tom Acton Memorial Trust

Detail of awards: The trust supports young musicians from Essex aged 25 or under with financial help for instruments, tuition, and other expenses. They select based on talent, and require an application supported by a teacher’s recommendation by 31st May.

Restrictions: You must have been born in, educated in, or be resident in Essex, and should be below the age of 25 on 31st May. You must have reached an advanced standard of musical education and will need to provide an independent reference from your instrumental teacher to support your application.

Details of awards: Scholarship fund to support high-achieving Indonesian students to study abroad.
