Ferrier Bursary Success

Tuesday 29 October 2013

RCM singers have enjoyed success in this year’s Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers.

RCM baritones James Wafer (pictured) and Huw Montague Rendall won first and third prizes respectively in the competition, which took place on Sunday 27 October in King George's Hall, Blackburn.

First Prize Winner James, who will receive £3000 over three years, said “It was a real privilege to sing at the Junior Ferrier competition representing the RCM; winning is beyond anything I could have imagined. Hearing and meeting my peers from all over the UK was a great pleasure and an experience I will never forget. Having two singers from RCM in the top three made the day even better.

The Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary for Young Singers was established in 1996 and is open to vocal students aged between 19 and 24 just beginning their second year of study at each of the eight major Music Colleges in England, Scotland and Wales. Each college sends two singers who to present a varied programme of 18 minutes.

Former winners of the Bursery's First Prize include RCM alumni Clint van der Linde, Simona Mihai, Sophie Bevan, Oliver Clarke and Sarah-Jane Lewis.
