Baroque Opera from Venice

Friday 23 August 2013

This autumn, we are delighted to welcome back our friends and partners English Touring Opera for a thrilling operatic season.

ETO have selected the intimate setting of the RCM’s Britten Theatre for eight performances of their national tour of Baroque Opera from Venice, showcasing three operas inspired by Venice’s humours and spirit.

The RCM / ETO acclaimed 2012 production of Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea will be revived in performances on 28 September and 9 October, directed once again by James Conway (General Director of ETO), with the company’s period instrument orchestra conducted by RCM Director of Opera Michael Rosewell.

On 4, 5, and 10 October the company presents one of the most groundbreaking operas of the 17th century, Cavalli’s Jason.

Then on 8, 11 and 12 October it’s the turn of Handel’s Agrippina - widely regarded as the composer’s first operatic masterpiece

RCM singers are taking on key roles in these productions, with soprano Hannah Sandison and baritone Luke D Williams (both fresh from the RCM’s summer production of La Vie Parisienne) featuring in The Coronation of Poppea and Agrippina, respectively. Recent RCM graduate Jake Arditti also features in both of these productions, while the title roles of Poppea and Jason will be played by RCM alumni Paula Sides and Clint van der Linde. In addition, a number of current RCM students will be gaining invaluable experience by covering roles in both Poppea and Agrippina.

Tickets for all three operas are available now from the ETO Box Office on 0844 412 4314. For further details and to book tickets online visit the ETO website.
