BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists Announced

Wednesday 4 September 2013

RCM pianist Pavel Kolesnikov has been named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2014.

Announced on BBC Radio 3’s drive-time show In Tune on 10 September, Pavel is one of six artists from around the globe that the station believes will be the classical music stars of the future.

The New Generation Artists (NGA) scheme supports the brightest musicians in reaching the next stage of their careers and showcases their talent to listeners across the UK via a series of BBC Radio 3 broadcasts. This year’s New Generation Artists will join those from 2013 including mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately, a recent graduate of the RCM International Opera School.

Pavel says: "The NGA Scheme is a very unique establishment and looks to me very much like an ideal platform for a young artist. I am very thrilled to become a part of this group for the next two years, and look forward particularly to some great collaborations with other artists. I hope to do something very special!"

Pavel is no stranger to success, having won the first prize at the highly prestigious Honens International Piano Competition in 2012 and receiving a 5 star Telegraph review for his Wigmore Hall debut in January. The Russian pianist – who is an RCM Else Gertrude Martin Scholar supported by an Evelyn Tarrant Award – can be seen performing as the first pianist in footage of this RCM Piano Masterclass with András Schiff, and in the RCM’s short film about the four-hand piano version of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring.

BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme provides musicians with opportunities to develop their live and recorded performances, including broadcasts with the BBC orchestras, lunchtime concerts from around the UK and regular studio recordings, as well as forming chamber music collaborations with fellow NGAs.
