Royal College of Music Junior Department (RCMJD) is a specialist term-time only Saturday school offering advanced training to musicians between the ages of 8 and 18. Students combine studying at RCMJD with their general education at their chosen week-day school. Students come together at the RCM London each Saturday for a tailor-made programme of individual instrument/voice/composition lessons, chamber music, orchestral and choral training, and general musicianship. Our staff are professional performers/composers as well as teachers and offer the highest standards of tuition and coaching.  About 75% of RCMJD students go on to study music at undergraduate level.

The RCMJD is seeking to engage a Head of Aural & Musicianship to join our vibrant and thriving department. The post holder will have excellent subject knowledge and the ability to combine academic rigour and achievement with enjoyment of the subject. They will work closely with the Head of Junior Programmes in running all matters related to the organisation and delivery of classroom music teaching within the RCMJD curriculum.

We expect to be able to offer 7 hours teaching per week, for 30 weeks per year. In addition to class musicianship teaching, this post attracts a responsibility allowance of two additional hours per week for preparation/administration.

The principal responsibilities of the post are:

  • To devise a challenging aural & musicianship curriculum for the RCMJD in consultation with the Head of Junior Programmes
  • To oversee and manage the delivery of aural & musicianship lessons for all year groups
  • To liaise with the Head of Junior Programmes to allocate music staff for aural & musicianship teaching
  • To take a lead in the future development of aural & musicianship provision with strategic vision

The successful applicant will need to make a regular commitment to the RCMJD on Saturdays from 9.00am to 5.00pm during term-time.
